How to request the Birth Certificate?

  • Request the certificate at the Civil Registry.

Currently, requesting this certificate online is more common, faster and cheaper. However, you must take into account that this method is only valid for all those people born from January 1, 1950.

  • First Option: in case you have the electronic DNI or, Key System.
  • Second Option: in case you do not have an electronic ID, you only have to fill out a form.

Where to order it and what is the cost?

Let’s continue explaining which is the body or institution that is responsible for issuing this type of certificate. Well, today, the Civil registration is the only entity in charge of delivering or issuing this document in Spain.

However, it is very important that you ask for the birth certificate in the Civil Registry of the place where you were born. The fact that you continue to live in that population is not relevant. In other words, if you were born in Seville, but you currently live in Barcelona, ​​you have to go to the Seville Civil Registry to request the document.

Now, the only thing you will need when applying for the certificate is your National Identity Document. It must be current and in good condition when it is presented. In addition, you must indicate the full name, place and date of birth.

A very frequent question is, if this certificate is valid abroad. And the answer is yes, but with two conditions. The first is that it must be legalized in the country of origin, the second is that the document has to be translated by Sworn Translation.

The certificate must be legalized by Hague Apostille, or by Diplomatic or Consular legalization. And, the sworn translation has to be into the language of the destination country, through an Official Sworn Translator.

Differences between the Literal and the Extract

We must mention that there are two types of certificates, which are: literal certificate and extract certificate. The request for the model of each one will depend on the type of procedure you wish to carry out. For this, the body that requires it must indicate which of the two is the one you must request.

  • Literal Birth Certificate: this document is nothing more than a copy of the Entry of the Original Birth Certificate.

It includes all the data found in the Civil Registry of the place where you were born. Likewise, you will need this type of document to register in the Register, to marry civilly, change your name, etc.

It is very important that you remember that, if you want to request the first identity card of a boy or a girl, the main document that you must request is the Literal Certificate of Birth for National Identity Document.

  • Birth Certificate: this document summarizes the person’s Birth Certificate.

This certificate contains less information and data than the Literal Birth Certificate. This is because it is a digital certificate. Usually this document is positive, But, if the respective data does not appear in the Civil Registry of Spain, a negative certificate.

What is the Birth Certificate?

In other words, when a person is born, a Civil Registry official has the obligation to write down specific information, such as: name, surname, date, time and place of birth, sex and pertinent data corresponding to the parents of the same.

All this information must be reflected in an inscription or entry in a book belonging to the Civil Registry of the place where you were born. This inscription or seat is what is commonly known in many countries as a Birth Certificate or Certificate.
