What is naturalization

It means when an individual acquires a new nationality; that is to say, receives two denominations, which can be called nationalization or naturalization.

For a foreign individual to obtain said nationality of a country, must comply with certain requirements. Not all applicants achieve their goal.

What naturalization can I request in Costa Rica

There are 6 types of naturalization, which are:

Naturalization by Law 1902 where it applies to those over 25 years of age: DESCENDANTS OF COSTARRICAN PROCREATORS BY BIRTH BORN ABROAD

Proceed with naturalization governed by this Law, it is necessary to have been born abroad, being the daughter or son of procreators, either mother or father, who are Costa Rican by birth, being over 25 years of age who have not chosen nationality.

Must have been in Costa Rica for 5 years, and for those who are born in another Ibero-American country, they must be 7 years old.

Naturalization of August 5, 1995 by the Law of 1916: DESCENDANTS OF FOREIGN PROCREATORS BORN IN COSTA RICA

To be naturalized by said Law, you must have been born in Costa Rica, being the son of foreign parents, who are over 25 years old, and have not made a nationality variable.

Must have resided for 5 years physically in the country for space if the parents are Spanish or Latin American by birth; in the case of parents with other nationalities it would be 7 years.

Naturalization by domicile, Law 1155

You must have officially resided in Costa Rica for 5 years per space to opt for this type of naturalization, and for those individuals of other nationalities, it would be 7 years.

Naturalization by entity: NATURALIZATION BY TRANSCENDENCE OF THE MOTHER OR FATHER

Proceed with naturalization through this modality, it is requested to be a minor, that either of the two procreators are naturalized or have the naturalization process; that your daughter or son is currently living in Costa Rica at the time of naturalization.

Naturalization by nuptials

To become naturalized through this modality, you need to have been married. with a Costa Rican individual, for at least 2 years, and have been in the country physically for the same period.

Naturalization by Law 1902 legal stay in Costa Rica for 20 years

Proceed with this modality you need have been in the country physically for 20 years or more.

Requirements for naturalization by residence

Initial application letter: It must be verified by a legal professional; additionally, it must be attached to any process phase or in said writing the power of attorney properly protocolized.

Birth certificate: It must be legalized or apostilled, issued by a competent authority of the country of origin, and correctly translated into Spanish if it is in another language.

Identification document: You can display the official document sent by the General Directorate of Immigration and Migration or the DIMEX document. The passport is not valid.

In addition, you must present a copy of your identification where it is valid, which is verified by a public notary.. If you do not have the copy, present yourself with the original.

Proof of salary from private or public company: With this document you will be able to demonstrate your livelihoods; in case of being a private company, It must be authenticated by a legal professional.

In case of being a public company, it must be judicially recognized; then the person who ensures its maintenance, You have to give a sworn statement rendered before the public notary’s office or before the civil registry, where proof of said maintenance is appreciated.

Statement: It must be sworn by two witnesses before a legally notarized public notary or before a Civil Registry official. Where means of life, good conduct and for the term of the established law are known.

Make sure that the declaration does not have contraventions, that is,, minor offenses that are not crimes.

Photographs and tax stamp: They must present 5 small-size photographs or passport and 1 tax stamp of 20 colones for Central American individuals, or, if applicable, 200 colones for all other nationalities.

Social Studies and Spanish Exams: They must be duly approved; You can also validate your primary and / or secondary degrees, as long as they have been obtained in Costa Rica, before said Ministry.

Naturalization requirements for Costa Rican marriage

Birth certificate:

It must be issued by a competent authority in your country of origin, correctly apostilled or legalized; if it is in another language, it must be correctly translated.

Identification document:

It can be the passport, the DIMEX document or any other document, as long as it is officially issued by the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners.

Additionally, a photocopy of the valid nationality identification must be presented; in case of having uncertified photocopies, they must present the original.

Initial application letter:

Present said document duly authenticated by a legal professional; in case the applicant allows another person to carry out said procedure In his name, the duly drawn up very special power of attorney must be notified in writing.

Photographs and tax stamp:

You have to attach 5 small-size photographs or passport, and regarding the tax stampIt must be 1 unit of 20 colones in the case of Central American citizens; for individuals of other nationalities it would be 200 colones.

Certification issued by the police and judicial authorities:

Present it duly apostilled or legalized and if required, correctly translated. It must be issued by your country of origin, or the last country that has lived abroad.

Requirements for transcendence naturalization

As in the previous requirements, they request:

Identification document:

Passport, DIMEX, and any other document is accepted, which is issued by the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners.

Initial petition letter:

Exhibit said document authenticated by a legal professional; In the event that the individual cedes power to another person, carry out said procedure on his or her behalf, the duly drawn up special power of attorney must be notified in writing.

Tax stamp and photographs:

It must be 1 unit of 20 colones in the case of Central American citizens; for individuals of other nationalities it would be 200 colones. You have to attach 5 small-size photographs or passport, and with respect to the tax stamp.

Birth certificate: It must be managed by a competent entity in your country of origin, correctly apostilled or legalized; if it is in another language, it must be correctly translated.

Certification issued by the police and judicial authorities: It must be issued by your country of origin, or the last country that lived abroad. Present it duly apostilled or legalized and if required, correctly translated.
