If your trip to Spain is as a tourist organized by a travel agency, it is most likely that the agency itself is in charge of carrying out the visa process and they will only request the necessary documentation, but perhaps the cost will be much higher. that if you process it on your own.

  • Be over sixteen years old, unless the work activity is carried out on their own, in which case, it is required to be over eighteen years of age.
  • Have the authorization to reside and work in Spain. This document must be requested by the employer offering the employment contract. It is a step prior to the visa application by the foreign worker.

Foreign citizens who wish to reside in Spain must have been previously authorized to do so, then obtain the corresponding visa that allows entry into Spain.

Your residence can be of character temporary (for a period greater than 90 days and less than five years) or long-term (where you authorize you to reside and work in Spain indefinitely, under the same conditions as Spaniards).

However, to opt for it, you will first need the temporary one for a period of five years continuously and meet the conditions established by regulation.

Visa to enter Spain

The type of visa you will need to travel to Spain will depend on the period of your stay and also on the activities you are going to carry out.

For each case there is a specific type of documentation, however we can speak of three fundamental types:

• Transit visas: for foreigners who will make a stopover or connection at an airport or seaport in Spain, to immediately continue their trip to another country. This in turn can be:

* Airport transit / to circulate through the international transit zone of a port or an airport, during stopovers or links of navigation or flight.

* Territorial transit / to cross Spanish territory for a maximum period of five days.

* Marine transit / for seafarers who need to stay temporarily in Spain to leave, shortly, on the same boat.

• Short-term visit visas: for short stays (less than 90 days). Known as a visitor visa, tourist visa or Schengen visa.

• Long-term visas: They are enabled to reside without exercising work or professional activity, to reside and work, and to reside and study or carry out academic research work.

Citizens of several Latin American countries benefit from the elimination of visa to enter Spain, that is, they do not need a visitor visa for a stay of a maximum of 90 days per semester, as long as they justify the reason for their trip.

These can be for tourism, business, visit or the completion of a language course or other short studies, student exchange on vacation, attending a scientific, artistic, academic or sports event, visiting a relative, medical treatment and others.

In your case if you need it, since Ecuador is not on the list of countries with an agreement to suppress the visitor’s visa and therefore the nationals of this Latin American nation must process it.

To request the Schengen visaYou should know that there are three main types of visa and it will depend on the purpose or nature of your trip:

  1. The uniform Schengen visa that represents a permit from one of the member countries of the Schengen Area for transit or residence in the desired territory for a specified period of time, up to a maximum of 90 days, every six months, from the date of entry.
  2. The second type of visa allows you to travel only in the Schengen state that issued the visa or, in some cases, in certain Schengen states specifically mentioned when applying for the visa.
  3. The national visa is granted to certain people who must study, work or reside permanently in one of the countries of the Schengen Area.

Once in Spain you will also have to do some paperwork if necessary, such as:

  • Short-term visa extensions: which you can obtain as long as the duration of your visa is less than 90 days. This can be done at the Immigration Offices and Police Stations.
  • Foreigner identity cards: When the duration of your stay or authorized residence in Spain lasts more than six months, you must apply for the corresponding foreigner identity card.

You can do so at the competent Police Station or Foreigners Office, within a month of entering Spain. If you have a seasonal residence or work visa, you are exempt.

Steps to apply for a visa to enter Spain

You can go to the different web pages of the different Consulates to manage the visa application process, since each one manages it independently and may vary with respect to obtaining appointments.

To obtain your Schengen visa in Ecuador, you must go to the Consulate of Spain in Quito or Guayaquil (the one that corresponds to you according to the established consular demarcation), request an appointment and present the following documentation in original and copy:

  • Fill out an application form.
  • Place a recent photograph on a light background.
  • Passport with copies of your previous visas, valid at least 3 months before your departure. The passport must have at least two blank pages.
  • Reservation of the round trip or itinerary with dates and flight numbers that specify the entry and exit of the Schengen Area.

It is important that the medical insurance policy is taken out before collecting the visa.
  • Proof of accommodation during the entire planned stay in the Schengen Area.
  • Proof of having sufficient means during the planned stay in the Schengen Area.

We recommend that on the day of your appointment you arrive at the consulate on time, take your turn and wait to be called by one of the consular employees. Deliver all your documentation and if the visa is approved, you must leave your passport, which will be returned to you personally or via Courier.

Cost of traveling to Spain

Ecuadorian citizens when traveling to Spain will take about 11 hours of flight since the distance is about 8,833 km.

In Spain the official currency in circulation is the Euro (€). It is It is necessary that you take as a reference its cost and the change of your currency; from then on you can make your budget. We recommend this due to the constant fluctuation of exchange rates.

Then, apart from the cost of the air ticket, keep in mind that the current average per stay in Spain is 80 Euros per day and varies depending on the style of accommodation you choose, food, visits to museums, transportation, etc.

Once you have done this, you will see that the price increase will be minimal and you will have a more realistic budget for the day you decide to travel, regardless of the country you are.

Visa cost to enter Spain

You must visit the Internet pages of the Embassies or Consulates to carry out this query since there are some in which the Schengen visa procedures to Spain are offered, and they are not authorized agencies, but private companies that act as intermediaries and that increase the final cost of the visa.

When applying for your Schengen visa you will have to pay a mandatory and non-refundable visa fee. These expenses vary depending on the type of visa and the age of the applicant, as well as some other exceptions.

There is an administration fee (non-refundable) and the visa expenses have been synchronized between the member countries expressed in Euros, as follows:

  • Airport transit visa / 60.00 (€)
  • Short stay Schengen visa (less than 90 days) / 60.00 (€)
  • Long stay visa (more than 90 days) / 99.00 (€)

The Schengen visa fee can be paid at the designated consulate or embassy by cash or debit and / or credit card, although some consulates do not allow payment by credit card.

What is the Schengen visa?

It is a document that allows you free movement within the entire «Schengen Area» with respect to the members of the Schengen Area of the European Union, as well as the members of the EFTA Schengen (American Free Trade Association).

The member countries of this space are 26 and here you will be able to find them.

EFTA is an association of ten Fair Trade importers in nine European countries (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom).

The Schengen area is made up of a group of European countries that have decided to eliminate all controls on their internal borders but that carry out border controls on travelers who cross the external borders of the area. The UK and Ireland are not part of this space.

Being from Ecuador you are fully authorized to apply for a Schengen visa, as long as you can obtain all the necessary documentation in order and have the financial means to support yourself during your stay in the Schengen Area.

It is important that you know that this is not a work visa and you should not confuse it with temporary residence visas, whether for work, family reunification, non-profit residence or other reasons.

Why should Ecuador ask for it?

Because there are countries subject to the visa requirement to cross external borders, Ecuadorian citizens must apply for the Schengen visa.

These are not on the list of member countries of the Schengen Area of the European Union, for which they are not allowed free movement without the necessary documentation.

The Schengen visa is valid since 2003, for Ecuador. Between 1998 and 2002, Ecuadorian emigration to the Old Continent, especially to Spain and Italy, was very high to overcome the economic crisis that affected the country. The same happened with other countries such as Colombia and Peru.

The request to eliminate this document for its citizens has already been submitted by the Government of Ecuador to the Schengen states and the European Commission belonging to the European Union, however the procedures for its execution are still in process and will depend on the commercial agreements to which both countries arrive.
