Requirements to renew passport

This procedure can be done through the Virtual Consulate System, if you meet the following requirements:

FOR CITIZENS OVER 18 YEARS OLD

  • Be citizens over 18 years of age
  • Be present at the time of the process, especially if it is for the first time.
  • Make previous registration in the system

  • Valid old passport

FOR MINOR CITIZENS

Minors must meet the following requirements:

  • Presence of the minor
  • Original of the minor’s citizenship card, whose photograph must correspond to their current appearance.
  • Presence of the father and mother, each with an original citizenship or identity card.
  • In case of being a non-resident foreign father and / or mother, present the original of the valid passport.
  • For citizens admitted to Ecuador with a document other than a passport, present the original of said document.
  • Free passport issuance authorization form signed by parents and / or legal representative / s.

In the absence of one or both parents:

You can present any of these documents:

  • Special power of attorney for the GRANTING OF THE PASSPORT or notarial authorization to leave the country, with the power to obtain a passport.
  • Judgment or Judicial Resolution that decides on parental authority (if applicable).
  • Death Certificate of the father or mother (if applicable).

In case of adoption:

  • General requirements
  • Judgment of the Court for Children and Adolescents.
  • If there is a legal representative, the presence of the same is necessary and the citizenship card must be presented; and, the original legal document authorizing the representation.

To replace the previous passport of minors:

  • General requirements
  • Valid old passport

FOR ECUADORIAN CITIZENS BY NATURALIZATION

  • General requirements
  • Simple copy of the Letter of Naturalization.

The confirmation process will be carried out in 72 working hours.

For loss or theft

FOR CITIZENS OVER 18 YEARS OLD

To replace a lost or stolen passport:

  • General requirements
  • Loss report
  • Form of Evidence of Lost Documents of the Judicial Council.

FOR MINOR CITIZENS:

To replace the passport for loss or theft of minors

  • General requirements
  • Form of evidence of lost documents of the Council of the Judiciary or Complaint or sworn statement made by the legal representative.

When you go to carry out your procedure, take into account the following recommendations:

The interested party is not required to carry photographs, these are captured in the same office, for this the citizen must meet the following requirements:

  • Do not show up with accessories such as headbands, headbands, large headbands, glasses, glasses, caps, very large earrings.
  • You must keep your neck visible by avoiding wearing scarves, large necklaces, high-necked jumpsuits, among others.
  • Avoid using sunscreen and lip gloss on your face.
  • Citizenship cards must not be damaged, perforated, cut or that the photograph is not distinguishable.
  • The identity cards of minors must respond to the current physiognomy of the person. Cédulas in which it is not possible to recognize the minor will not be accepted.

By identity theft

To replace the passport for identity theft, you must present:

  • General requirements
  • Complaint in the Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office)
  • Original index card issued by the Civil Registry
  • Original fingerprint card issued by the Civil Registry
  • Original full certified copy of the birth registration certificate issued by the Civil Registry
  • Other photo identification documents

When there is a case of identity theft, adoption and emergency, it is recommended to personally approach the legal area of ​​the Administrative Unit of Travel Documents to obtain detailed information.

It should be noted that the new Ecuadorian passport has security features that differentiate it from its counterparts in other countries. The document is printed by the Military Geographical Institute (IGM) of the Armed Forces and has the endorsement of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Passport renewal cost

The value of the passport is: $ 70.00 USD

  • For diplomats, officers and specials: $ 120.00
  • For the elderly, they will receive a 50% exemption, in compliance with the legal provision.
  • For people with disabilities, it is completely free. Upon presentation of the respective card issued by the competent entity.

It should be noted that in these cases, photographs are not required for the issuance process.

Steps to renew the passport

To get your passport renewed, follow these steps:

  • Request an appointment in the system
  • When prompted, go personally to the corresponding civil registry offices.
  • Present your old passport and identity card.

In Ecuadorian territory, the passport issuance service is provided at the Civil Registry Offices.

The service is also available in the cities of Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Azogues, Machala, Loja, Ambato, Riobamba, Manta and Santo Domingo, in the rest of the country, it will be implemented gradually.

Rest of the country: In each of the provincial governments, in this case the issuance of the document will take between 48 and 72 hours.

What if I am abroad?

Outside the country, this service is channeled through the offices provided by the Consular Service.

Remember that the Ecuadorian passport is a travel document, which allows its holders to leave the national territory and move abroad.

These are the requirements that you must meet to carry out your renewal if you are abroad, according to Ministerial Agreement No. 000075 of September 6, 2011:

  • General requirements for all cases
  • Presence of the applicant
  • Original and copy of the identity card

In the absence of one or both parents:

  • Presence of the representative with original and copy of the valid ID or passport; and, of the authorizing document of the representation.
  • If the absent father or mother is in the country where the passport is requested:
  • Special Power of Attorney for the granting of the passport; o Notarial Authorization to Leave the Country, with the power to obtain a passport.

If the absent father or mother is abroad:

  • Special Power of Attorney for the granting of the passport, granted before the Ecuadorian Consulate or foreign Notary’s Office (the notarized document must be legalized or apostilled and translated into Spanish, if applicable);
  • It can also be a Notarial Authorization to Leave the Country, with the power to obtain a passport; or, (the document must be legalized or apostilled and translated into Spanish if applicable).
  • Consular authorization to leave the country and issuance of the passport for minors.

If the absent father or mother is in Ecuador:

  • Special Power of Attorney for the granting of the passport before a Notary; o Notarial Authorization to Leave the Country, with the power to obtain a passport.
  • Judgment or Judicial Resolution on parental authority (if applicable).
  • Death certificate of father or mother (if applicable)

How often does the passport renewal take place

The passport is valid for 6 years and to leave the country this document must not expire in the next 6 months from the date of travel.

What happens if I don’t renew my passport?
