What is the DGT?

The General direction of traffic (often called DGT) is an autonomous body of the Spanish government dependent on the Ministry of the Interior responsible for the implementation of road policy on state highways in Spain.

In its traffic control and regulation tasks, the DGT has a Helicopter Unit, equipped with 21 helicopters of the EC120, AS-355N / NP and EC135 models, stationed at the bases of Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza, Malaga , Valladolid La Coruña.

It was created by Law 47/59, of July 30, 1959, regulating competition in traffic matters. Since then it has 14 traffic chiefs. The current one is Pere Navarro Olivella.

Its functions

The DGT is in charge of collecting data on road safety in Spain and preparing annual reports called “Main magnitudes of road accidents”, which collect various indicators such as the number of fatalities per year.

Since the records began (1960), the figures have increased every year with the increase in the number of vehicles, reaching its peak in 1989 with 5,940 deaths on the roads of Spain.

Starting this year, it was decided to implement persistent road policies, awareness campaigns and re-education to achieve sustainable reductions since then.

With the arrival of the 21st century, the number of accidents in Spain was comparable to that of other European countries. In 2010, the annual death toll in Spain fell by 2,000 for the first time since 1966.

In 2017, it was around 1,200 per year. 7 8 Since August 1, 2019, the DGT has a new ally responsible for denouncing the infractions on Spanish roads.

These are three drones that already cross the sky at a height of 120 meters in order to guarantee the road safety of citizens and reduce the number of deaths in traffic accidents.

In July 2020, the DGT began testing the ‘Trukam II’ 10 radar, capable of detecting violations at a distance of more than one kilometer and up to 320 kilometers per hour.
