Procedures and Requirements for IGSS Maternity registration

The maternity suspension allowance in Guatemala is a payment made by the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) to affiliated mothers to help with the expenses before and after childbirth. Maternity leave is enjoyed for a total of 84 days. Below are the requirements for IGSS maternity enrollment.

What is maternity leave?

It is a right contemplated in the legislation of almost all the countries of the continent and consists of a period of paid leave that future mothers enjoy during the last days of pregnancy and the first days after delivery.

During this time, working mothers will be able to absent themselves from their work and receive remuneration for 100% of their salary.

The time of maternity leave in Guatemala is 84 days divided into a prenatal and postnatal period as follows:

  • Prenatal period: 30 days before the estimated date of delivery.
  • Postnatal period: 54 days after delivery.

If the baby is born before the date, during the prenatal break, the days are carried over and added to the 54 days after delivery.

Then, you can return to the job or an equivalent in remuneration and that is related to the aptitudes, capacity and competence.

Requirements for Maternity Enrollment

To carry out the IGSS registration for maternity, the following requirements must be met:

  • Have contributed in 3 months, within 6 months prior to the start of the pre and postnatal rest. Affiliates enrolled after August 5, 2005 must have contributed 4 months.
  • Present the IGSS Affiliation card.
  • Work certificate with 3 months prior to the month of the pre and postnatal break. For affiliates enrolled after August 5, 2005 they must have 4 months contributed.
  • Personal Identification Document (DPI) that is presented at the bank when collecting the subsidy.
  • Mandate with representation, in the event that the affiliate cannot collect their payment physically.

In the case of being State workers, the Salary Cut Report must be recorded issued by the employer at the time of the pre and postnatal rest.

The IGSS recognizes 100% of the daily salary to the affiliate for temporary maternity disability during 84 days of rest. These are divided into the 30 days before delivery and 54 days after delivery. This subsidy is also paid for unintentional abortion 100% of the affiliate’s daily salary, for the period of suspension that has a maximum of 27 days.

The right to enjoy maternity allowance and suspension it will depend on the fulfillment of the effective rest of the affiliated worker, who must abstain from all paid work while receiving maternity allowance.

If the service was not used medical care When requested in the IGSS, present the Birth Certificate of the son or daughter in the Unit where the suspension notice was extended to prepare the Report of Registration to the Employer.

Documents for maternity registration

The documents for maternity registration in Guatemala are the following:

  • IGSS Membership Card
  • Work certificate with 3 months or periods prior to the month of the pre and post natal break. For affiliates registered after August 5, 2,005, present the Work Certificate with 4 months or periods prior to the month of the pre and post natal break.
  • Personal Identification Document (DPI), required by the Bank, when collecting the subsidy.
  • Mandate with representation, in the event that the affiliate is physically unable to collect her payment, required by the Bank, at the time of collecting the subsidy.
  • When a case of spontaneous or therapeutic abortion occurs, a subsidy is granted for up to a maximum period of 27 days from the date of the abortion, provided that temporary disability is declared.
  • Salary Cut Report, in the case of State Workers, issued by their Employer at the time of the pre and post natal break.

  • Medicines .
  • Dental Assistance.
  • Radiological, Laboratory Examinations and other necessary complements.
  • Survival Pension.
  • Mortuary Fee.

For mother

  • Medical Attention for Illness in the department of Guatemala.
  • Maternity Medical Care, provided that the conditions described in the Regulation are met
  • Accident Medical Care.
  • Hospitalization for Illness, in the department of Guatemala
  • Maternity Hospitalization, provided that the conditions described in the Regulations are met.
  • Accident Hospitalization.
  • Emergency Medical Care.
  • Rehabilitation, provided that the conditions described in the Regulation are met.
  • Orthopedic and Prosthetic Devices, provided that the conditions described in the Regulations are met.
  • Dental Assistance.
  • Radiological, Laboratory Examinations and other necessary complements.
  • Survival Pension, provided that the conditions described in the Regulations are met
  • Mortuary quota, provided that the conditions described in the Regulation are met

How long do IGSS benefits last?

Maternity benefits from the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) last until the infant is 7 years old, with the exception of the survivor’s pension and the Mortgage Fee.

When should I go to register for the IGSS?

As explained in the requirements to enhance the process, it is necessary to have contributed in 3 months, within the 6 months prior to the beginning of the pre and postnatal rest. It is important to remember that as of August 5, 2005 they must have contributed 4 months.
