A driver’s license is understood to be that document that accredits the citizen who owns it, an administrative and legal authorization to drive vehicles on public roads. The requirements for the first license are presented in detail below.

What is Maycom?

Maycom SA was founded in 1995 and was established as an inclusive company that provides Biometric Identification Systems. Since 1999 it has produced, managed and controlled the production of Vehicle Driver Licenses for the Republic of Guatemala.

In 2004 Maycom became the first private company to provide a government service to the Republic of Guatemala and the Ministry of the Interior with ISO 9001: 2000 certification, which was renewed in 2009 with the new ISO 9001 version. : 2008.

Requirements to obtain a license

First of all, to process the driver’s license, You must have the conditions and requirements for the first license presented below:

  • Be solvent of fines.
  • For Type A professional license you must be 23 years old and have a minimum of 3 years of having a type C or B license. With this type of license you can drive vehicles of all kinds, school and collective, greater than 3.5 tons and can receive remuneration.
  • For a Type B light license, you must be 21 years old. With this type you can drive vehicles of up to 3.5 tons and can receive remuneration.
  • Present the regulatory documentation according to the type of citizen (major or minor) and the type of license requested.

For minors

  • Be solvent of fines.
  • Be over 16 years of age at least.

Documents for first license

Any citizen of legal age who wishes to apply for a driver’s license must provide the following documents:

  • Identification Document (DPI only) original and in good condition.
  • Photocopy of the Identification Document (DPI)
  • Ornato ticket original of the current year.
  • Certificate of approval of the theoretical-practical driving exam, issued by the Automobile School authorized by the Traffic Department of the National Civil Police.
  • Original invoice issued by the Licensed Motor Racing School.
  • Receipt of payment for the amount corresponding to the validity period that you wish to have the license, this payment is made only in Banrural agencies located within all Maycom agencies. (Up to a maximum of 4 years for adults).
  • Eye exam issued by a Optical Clinic or Active Chartered Professional Ophthalmologist, that complies with the requirements established by the Traffic Department of the National Civil Police.
  • Original eye exam bill.
  • In the case of requesting a Type E license, a photocopy of the Commercial Patent and letter issued by the company where the interested citizen works must be attached.

For minors

In the case of minors who wish to process their driver’s license for the first time, It is important to remember that the issuing company requires that you be at least 16 years old. In turn, the following documents must be presented:

  • Certificate of approval of the theoretical-practical driving exam, issued by the Automobile School authorized by the Traffic Department of the National Civil Police.
  • Original invoice issued by the authorized Motor Racing School.
  • Receipt of payment for the amount corresponding to the validity period that you wish to have the license, this payment is made only in Banrural agencies located within all Maycom agencies. (Up to a maximum of 4 years for adults).
  • Eye exam issued by an Active Collegiate Professional Optical Clinic or Ophthalmologist, who meets the requirements established by the Traffic Department of the National Civil Police.
  • Original eye exam bill.
  • In the case of requesting a Type E license, a photocopy of the Commercial Patent and letter issued by the company where the interested citizen works must be attached.
  • Original birth certificate issued by the National Registry of Persons (RENAP), it must be valid for a maximum of 6 months.
  • A letter must be submitted stating that the parent or guardian is responsible for the minor applicant. This letter must be authenticated by a lawyer and present the Personal Identification Document (DPI) of the parent or guardian and a copy.   • Original and photocopy of the identification document (DPI) in good condition of the parent or legal guardian.
  • Proof of payment for one year (Q100.00)

By collecting all these documents, it will be possible to be present at any of the License Issuance Centers.

License cost

The costs are established according to the years paid, understood as follows:

  • One (1) year paid: Q100.00
  • Two (2) years paid: Q185.00
  • Three (3) years paid: Q260.00
  • Four (4) years paid: Q320.00
  • Five (5) years: Q390.00
  • Replacement and / or Transfer: Q100.00

Payments should only be made in the Banrural agencies located in the Maycom broadcasting centers.

License types

The Traffic Regulations of the Republic of Guatemala describe the following types of driver’s license:

Type A

This license enables the citizen to drive all kinds of cargo transportation vehicles of more than 3.5 metric tons of maximum gross weight, school and group transportation.

Type B

This type of license allows the citizen to drive all kinds of cars or motor vehicles up to 3.5 metric tons maximum gross weight, being able to receive driving compensation.

Type C

This license authorizes the citizen to drive all kinds of cars, panels, minibuses, pick-ups with or without a trailer and a maximum gross weight of up to 3.5 metric tons without receiving compensation.

Type M

This kind of license enables the citizen to drive all kinds of motorcycles and motorcycles.

Type E

Finally, this license enables the citizen to drive agricultural and industrial machinery. It is important to note that it does not authorize its owner to drive any other type of vehicle.

License validity period

The duration of the license of driving, is established at the time of processing it when payment is made for it. You can choose between a minimum of one (1) year of validity, and a maximum of five (5) years of validity.

  3. Certificate of IPR, granted in the RENAP, or, failing that, a photocopy of the IPR.
  4. Proof of payment for One Hundred Quetzales (Q.100.00), made at the Banrural agency inside the Maycom Centers.

  6. Vision test.
  7. Original exam invoice.

  • Can I acquire, renew or replace my driver’s license while abroad?
For the moment, There is no service that allows citizens to carry out procedures in relation to their driver’s license while residing abroad; because the process is strictly personal.
  • Can I renew my license with the passport?
No, the only valid identification document is the DPI, to which you will not be able to carry out any procedure related to your license if you present your passport.
  • How do I know if I have fines and how much should I pay for them?

Only the Department of Traffic is the one that can indicate if fines are presented.
The citizen can personally consult any Transit Delegate located in any of the Maycom modules of the city or the interior of the country.
