The Quality Tools: Definition, Objectives, Importance, Description and MORE

7 minutos de lectura

Quality generates products and services, reduces costs, and allows increasing the financial profit of companies. It is a motivating factor and integration of workers, since it is the objective that guides all actions in organizations, companies and even businesses.

This is why in this article we are going to talk a little about quality tools, what are they, what is their importance, what are they used for and much more. Share this information if you think it’s necessary!

What are Quality Tools?

As a general rule, there are some characteristics that can be considered critical to establish the quality of a service or a product. If any quality characteristic of a product or service is measured, numerical values will be observed. These will show fluctuations or variability between the different units of product manufactured or service provided.

Quality tools They are a set of methodologies that are gathered and widely disseminated as a way to improve business processes. They are also used in all management systems to help improve services and processes.

These tools are used to define, measure, analyze, and propose solutions to problems that in a certain way interfere with the performance and results of companies. These will help establish the most elaborate methods of resolution based on facts and data.

This will increase the success rate of the action plans. When we talk about quality, we automatically refer to internal quality or that which will evaluate the deviations obtained from internal operations. But, there is also an external quality, which is one that will be evaluated from the client.

Regardless of the type of quality and how we measure it, what should not be discussed is that non-quality has a cost. Either because of the reprocessing that it generates, because of what the return process involves, or because of the raw material that has already been used and that finally has to be removed.

But how do we reduce non-quality? For this, we have to make use of a series of tools that, applied all of them on the processes, will allow an analysis and an improvement of the same. All these methodologies will be known as “The quality tools«

What are they used for?

The quality tools, are known as written techniques or procedures that will help a company measure the quality of service or the quality of the product. It will allow you to solve problems related to quality and better plan your processes to carry out an improvement in productivity and customer services.

Quality problems are often presented as losses, for example defective products, retests, and the losses they cause. They are basic because they do not require advanced knowledge of statistics to apply it. As we already know, these tools will be used to improve the quality system.

These tools will be used to develop better quality control through measurements, analysis and suggestions for solutions to problems that may arise and that affect the performance of the organization’s procedure itself.

Thanks to these tools it is possible to achieve a variety of benefits that will provide what is necessary to renew the system and in this way, get the most out of it. Next, we will let you know some benefits that they give the quality tools:

  • Cut expenses.
  • Smooths production.
  • Encourage procedures.
  • Reduces waste and losses.
  • Helps to obtain greater effectiveness in terms of energy.
  • Minimize production time.
  • Increase the quality of the final product.
  • Provides security to the human team.

Ultimately, the result of all this is that the product is acceptable, the risk is as low as possible and the losses are almost non-existent. Applying quality tools, any type of business will have the opportunity to improve everything regarding its internal processes.

Within a business, quality control is and will be fundamental in the products that are developed, being needed for that reason quality tools that help us to perform the corresponding tasks correctly.

objectives

As we already know, quality tools They are used to determine, measure and analyze solutions to those problems of a company. These tools emerged in the 50s approximately, based on concepts and practices existing at the time.

Since that decade it has been used to support management systems through statistical models that contribute to the improvement of processes and procedures. Next, we will let you know some of the objectives of the quality tools.

  • Facilitate data collection.
  • Automatically organize your data so it can be easily used later.
  • Reveal the possible statistical structure of a group of data in order to interpret them.
  • Find out if there is a correlation between two characteristics or variables, that is, when we suspect that the variation of one is linked to the other.
  • Carry out a critical review of the process, providing an overview of it to facilitate understanding.
  • Identify the root or main cause of a problem or effect.
  • Classify and relate the interactions between factors that are affecting the outcome of a process.
  • Identify the most important problems on which improvement efforts should focus and determine in what order to solve them.
  • Provide a means to evaluate whether or not a manufacturing process, service or administrative process is in a state of statistical control, that is, to evaluate the stability of a process.

All these objectives are usually very valuable when it comes to putting into practice quality tools. It should be noted that quality control is based on a set of tools and mechanisms to be able to identify errors in a product in the best possible way.

What are the Quality Tools?

There are currently seven (7) quality tools. This allows people who make use of them to choose the one that best suits their needs. Let us remember that these tools are used to improve the quality of the company and therefore, the quality of care.

The seven basic tools are in contrast to the more advanced statistical methods, such as survey sampling, acceptance sampling, hypothesis testing, design of experiments, multivariate analysis, and the various methods developed in the field of Operations Research.

  • Cause Diagram – Effect. Identify possible causes of an effect or problem and classify ideas into useful categories.
  • Flowchart (Can be substituted for stratification or run chart). Shows the sequence of steps and branching possibilities that exist in a process that transforms one or more inputs into one or more outputs.
  • Verification or check sheets. Check sheets are used to organize the facts in a way that facilitates the collection of a set of useful data on a potential quality problem.
  • Pareto chart. Pareto charts are a particular form of a vertical bar chart and are used to identify the few key sources responsible for most of the effects of problems..
  • Histograms. They are a special form of bar chart and are used to describe the central tendency, spread, and shape of a statistical distribution.
  • Diagrams or control chart. SThey are used to determine whether a process is stable or has predictable behavior. The upper and lower limits of the specifications are based on the pre-established requirements. They reflect the maximum and minimum allowed values.
  • Scatter diagrams. Represent pairs ordered (X, Y) and are often called correlation diagrams, as they are intended to explain a change in the dependent variable Y relative to an observed change in the independent variable X.

Importance

Good quality is a condition that every service must have in order to achieve greater performance in its activity and durability, complying with standards and rules necessary to meet customer needs.

Quality within a company is a very important factor that produces satisfaction for its customers, employees and shareholders, and provides practical tools for comprehensive management. At present, it is necessary to comply with quality standards in order to compete in an increasingly demanding market.

For years it has been proven that using the wrong tools to do a job can compromise the quality of the job. That is why a series of quality tools has been created, in this way, we will guarantee that you can have success when using them.

Likewise, if what we want is to improve the quality of the company, products or service, using these tools we will be able to achieve it. Why is it important to use quality tools?

Because thanks to them we will save a lot of time and we will ensure better finishes with any tool we select, we will save money that can be invested in something else and we will be able to count on protection and safety when working.
