For tourism

When visiting Costa Rica as a tourist, the general requirements are:

  • Valid and in good condition passport. Its validity is regulated and established by the country of origin.
  • Return ticket or travel continuity ticket.
  • Demonstration of financial solvency ($ 100 for each month of tourism).

For work

Those admitted or authorized as permanent residents may participate in any task, remunerated or lucrative activity on their own account, or in a dependency relationship, according to their income category and in accordance with the laws that regulate their exercise and with the provisions of the current Migration and Foreigners Law.

Those admitted as temporary may, with the exceptions established by law, develop salaried or lucrative tasks on their own account or in a dependency relationship only during the period of their legal permanence and in those activities authorized by the General Directorate of Migration, with a prior favorable report from the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

The working day is divided into three classes: daytime (between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.) that may not be more than 8 hours a day and 48 hours a week; night (between 19:00 and 05:00 hours) that may not be more than 6 hours a day and 36 hours a week; and mixed, divided between day and night, not being able to exceed 7 hours a day and 42 a week.

All workers must be affiliated to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) and enjoy insurance against Work accidents that the employer pays to the National Insurance Institute.

As student

  • Affiliation form duly completed; in print, legible and signed.
  • Letter indicating the reasons for which you request the special category. The full name of the applicant, nationality, age, occupation, address of the place where they live and place or medium for notifications must be indicated. The letter must be signed, you can do it in front of the Immigration officer or present the signature authenticated by a lawyer.

  • Birth certificate of the foreign person; issued in the country of origin, duly legalized or apostilled.
  • Certification of criminal records of the foreign person from the country of origin or the place where you have legally resided for the last three years, duly legalized or apostilled.
  • Photocopy of all pages of the valid passport of the foreign person. The photocopy must be certified, either compared with the original before the official who receives it, or by means of a notary public.
  • In the case of students, researchers and teachers must present a certification issued by the educational institution and signed by the legal representative or the director of the institution, indicating that the foreign person is a student, teacher or researcher of the recognized educational center.

How to travel to Costa Rica from Nicaragua?

By plane
