Requirements to adopt a child in Peru
In order to adopt infants in Peru, you must be Peruvian citizen or foreign citizen residing in Peruas well as foreign citizens whose country of residence has signed an Agreement in this regard with Peru or with the National Secretariat for Adoptions.
The requirements are:
- It is recommended that applicants be married, however single, divorced and widowed people will be allowed in exceptional cases, since applicants must be between 30 and 45 years old and will be previously verified.
- Applicants must be between the ages of 25 and 55, and must adopt people who are at least 18 years apart.

In the same way, married couples must have completed a minimum of high school academic instruction.
- Applicants must attend a training workshop given by the National Secretariat for Adoption.
- In the case of foreigners or residents abroad, they must remain in Peru for a minimum of 30 days.
- The selection criteria to adopt a child according to their age must be taken into account:
- Applicants between the ages of 25 and 43 may adopt newborns up to 3-year-olds.
- Applicants between the ages of 43 and 51 may adopt infants from 3 to 4 years of age.
- Applicants between the ages of 51 and 55 may only adopt children from 5 years of age.
- Single, divorced or widowed people with children will be offered the proposal to adopt children over 6 years of age.
Procedures to carry out the adoption
As to documents necessary, it is important to note that They must have a time of no more than one year of issuanceand in the case of documents referring to health, they must not have been issued for more than three months at most.
- An application must be submitted to the National Secretariat for Adoptions where the reason for adopting a girl, boy or adolescent is stated (this applies to both married couples and natural persons).

Steps to adopt a child in Peru
It consists of several stages:
First stage
- To start the procedures, you must attend the so-called Informative Session and the pre-adoption workshops.

- Finally, there will be a legal term of one day to carry out the resolution of the adoption and its corresponding signature, which will then be communicated to the RENIEC (National Registry of Identification and Civil Status) and upon completion, the new departure of the adopted child will be obtained.
- After the favorable report is issued, the parents sign the Adoption Resolution and the commitment.
third stage
- Finally, semi-annual visits will be made to the families during the following three years.
- In the case of international adoptions, families or institutions with legal permits must communicate semi-annual reports for a period of 4 years, there may be exceptions according to international agreements.

IMPORTANT:
- It is important to note that all the documentation presented by the adopters residing abroad must be translated into Spanish by a public translator and the signatures legalized by the official authorities of the foreign country, by the Peruvian Consulate and by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru.
- All documentation cannot be older than eight months.
International Adoptions
In the case of foreign citizens who wish to adopt a Peruvian child should refer to all the indications previously expressedwith the exception that when starting their procedures they must:
- Make an appearance and present your adoption application at the centers or institutions authorized by your country of residence to process international adoptions, in accordance with current international conventions, either embassies or institutions designated for procedures for adopting infants.

Peruvian adopters residing abroad
In the case of Peruvian citizens who are residents outside of Peru, they will not be subject to the obligation to submit their application and documentation through the institutions authorized to process international adoptions.

Priority Adoptions
