Procedures and Requirements for the passport in Puerto Rico

In Puerto Rico, as in all countries, you can get your passport complying with the passport requirements and thus travel to the country you want, since the passport is essential to enter any country. Follow these steps to obtain your passport in Puerto Rico.

Passport requirements in Puerto Rico

The passport requirements in Puerto Rico are the ones that will be mentioned below:

  • That you are going to apply for the passport for the first time.
  • When the applicant was first issued the passport they were under 16 years of age, now they need the passport to identify them as a person of legal age.
  • If you are over 15 years old, you do not renew your passport.
  • If the passport is damaged, lost or stolen.
  • That the passport is expired.

Documentation required for the passport

The documents to obtain the passport in Puerto Rico are these:

  • Birth certificate officially stamped by the Demographic Registry.*
  • Original certificate of naturalization with its photocopy.*
  • Original citizenship certificate with its photocopy.*
  • Consular birth certificate in original and in copy
  • Passport type photograph with a white background, without glasses or hat.*
  • Application Form DS-11
  • Application form DS-82 if you are going to renew the passport.
  • Current driver’s license
  • Military Service ID
  • The expired passport if you are going to renew.*

  • Application for passports for the first time must be filled out form DS-11.
  • Passport renewal corresponds to the DS-82 form.
  • For loss or theft, request form DS-64.
  • DS-3053 – (Consent/Affidavit for minors under 16 years of age).

Passport offices

These are the offices in Puerto Rico where you can process the passport.


  • Ponce Office

Direction: Ponce Services Building Calle Mayor #73 suite 180, PR 00730.

Hours of operation: from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The attention will be in order of arrival and only the number of people that the office staff can attend to at that moment will be attended.


  • Fajardo Office

Direction: Calle Dr. López Esquina, Calle Muñoz Rivera Fajardo, PR 00738. They are currently located on the second floor of the Municipal Electronic Library until further notice.

Hours of operation: from eight in the morning to three in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. The attention is in order of arrival.


  • Arecibio office

Address: City Hall, 1st floor San José Diego Avenue #100 Arecibio PR 00612.

Hours of operation: from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is served in order of arrival.

Mayaguez Mall Office

Direction: Mayagüez Mall 975, Avenida Eugenio María de Hostos Mayagüez, PR 00680

Hours of operation: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is served in order of arrival.

These are the countries that a Puerto Rican can visit only with a passport

Countries of Central America and the Caribbean

Antigua, Barbuda, Bolivia, Cuba, Honduras, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Nicaragua.

Caribbean Islands: Aruba, Curacao, Haiti, Santo Domingo.

South American countries

Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guyana, Paraguay and Peru.

European countries

The duration of the process will be indicated to you at the office where you are going to process the passport. It is recommended that you take precautions for possible mishaps that may occur while you are obtaining your passport.

Passport cost in Puerto Rican

The cost of the passport varies according to the way in which it is going to be paid, in this case you can pay in the name of the US Department of State or in the name of the Secretary of the Treasury.

These are the costs for each entity:

  • Adults over 16 years : 110 dollars will be paid by the US Department of State, 35 dollars if it will be paid by the Secretary of the Treasury.
  • Under 15 years: 15 dollars will be paid by the US Department of State and 35 dollars if it will be paid by the Secretary of the Treasury.

Payment method to obtain the passport card

You can pay the US Department of State with a personal check, certified check, or money order

To the Secretary of the Treasury with certified checks or money orders

The cost of the procedure is as follows:

  • Adults over 16 years : 30 dollars will be paid by the US Department of State, 35 dollars if it will be paid by the Secretary of the Treasury.
  • Under 15 years: 15 dollars will be paid by the US Department of State and 35 dollars if it will be paid by the Secretary of the Treasury.
