We always find it pleasant to plan a trip abroad, well, we must check the status of our passport, it is one of the essential documents for this plan, it allows us to legally leave or enter our country and the rest of the world, either through border posts, airports, or international ports, complying with the established norms, in international agreements between countries.
One of the characteristics of a passport is that it has international validity, it is issued by accredited bodies in the respective countries, certifying our nationality and identity, its size is the same in most countries, on whose cover you can read the name of the issuing country, its national symbol and the name of the document.
Requirements to get the passport
The procedures to obtain the Uruguayan passport can be for the First Time, Common Renewal or Urgent Renewal.
The requirements are the same for any of the three, with the exception of Renewals, which must present the previous Passport, taking into account the conditions of citizenship (natural, national, legal) and their age, that is, older or younger than 18 years, also due to special conditions.
There are options to manage the procedures, both in person, at the headquarters of the National Civil Directorate and at the Departmental Civil Identification Offices (except Géant, Las Piedras and Pando), at the premises of REDPAGOS, ABITAB or Correo del Uruguay, at any place of the country, and online (electronic), for this option it is required to have Uruguayan ID account.
The documents to be presented will be detailed below, according to the type of procedure, citizenship, age and other special conditions.
Necessary documents
For those over 18 years of age, the following is required (natural, nationalized):
- Identity card valid and in good condition.
- Present the Passport to renew or the respective complaint, if there was theft or loss. For renewal only.
For minors under 18 years of age (natural and nationalized):
- Identity card valid and in good condition.
- Present the Passport to renew or the respective complaint, if there was theft or loss. For renewal only.
- The Birth Certificate, with an issuance time of less than 30 days.
In the condition of legal citizenship, with age greater than 18 years:
- Identity card valid and in good condition.
- Present the Passport to renew or the respective complaint, if there was theft or loss. For renewal only.
- The Citizenship Charter issued by the competent body, that is, the Electoral Court.
- The document that enables you to vote or credential, only if the Citizenship Charter was issued more than three years ago.
For special cases, the following must be submitted:
- The Certificate of National Registry of Personal Acts, Interdictions Section: for people with obvious disabilities, not declared incapable:
- Judicial authorization: person judicially declared incapable, with guardianship, and in the case of minors, the refusal to appear by one or both parents, may also present a special power of attorney issued by a Notary Public.
- In the case of Minors, whose representative is outside the country: Authorization issued by the Uruguayan Consulate of the Country where they reside.
- In the case of Minors, with deceased parents: Submit Death Certificate.
- Minors, whose representative is a state body: the Institute for Children and Adolescents of Uruguay issues the authorization for these cases.
- Married minors: Marriage certificate, issued less than 30 days.
First time
The processing of your passport for the first time, has two stages, whether you do it in Montevideo or in the interior:
- the request for hearing or appointment, with the respective payment of the procedure and
- obtaining the passport
Renewal
Your passport can be renewed up to 12 months before expiration.
If it were the case, that it requires renewing it before 12 months from the expiration date, you must complete the early renewal request form and present it in person:
- In Montevideo, at the Headquarters, at Rincón 665, Document Management Office, on Floor 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- In the Interior, in the departmental office that corresponds to it, to be delivered to the National Director, during the hours of each Office.
On the contrary, if the validity is greater than 12 months, the electronic form is completed to obtain the corresponding authorization.
The renewal process, as for the first time, also has two stages:
- the request for hearing or appointment, with the respective payment of the procedure and
- obtaining the passport
Steps to follow
The procedures for issuing a Passport for the First time, such as Renewal, present two stages: the Request for a hearing with the payment and Obtaining the Passport:
For the Request for Hearing with the corresponding paymentThere are three modalities:
- In person: attending with the current identity card and in good condition, with the documentation indicated above according to their condition (over 18 years, natural, national and legal) at the headquarters:
- Montevideo: Bartolomé Miter 1434 corner May 25
- Inside: Offices Civil Identification Departments (except Géant, Las Piedras, Pando)
- Online: by entering https://tramites.gub.uy/ampliados?id=606, select “online procedures”, “passport”. Complete the required fields for your request.
- Through Collection Agencies: It is done personally at the premises of REDPAGOS, ABITAB or Correo del Uruguay, anywhere in the country.
In the case of Minors, in addition to the Identity Card, the Birth Certificate must be presented less than 30 days after it was issued and both parents must be present, otherwise review the documents for special cases.
If you choose to carry out your procedure online, you will have the payment record, through the platforms of: Banco Itaú (Sistarbanc), Banque Heritage, BANRED, BBVA, BROU and Santander.
For Obtaining or receiving the Passport:
In Montevideo:
- When obtaining the hearing or appointment, personally attend the office that corresponds to you, on the assigned date and time, with the documents requested as the case may be.
- The same day it will be delivered.
Once the time established for delivery has expired:
- Common procedure: according to demand.
- Urgent processing: 2 business days
Inside:
- Personally attend the Departmental Office of Civil Identification, Identity Card, proof of payment, and documentation requested to complete the process and withdraw your Passport.
Taking into account that the time established for delivery has expired:
- Common procedure: 15 business days after processing
- Urgent processing: 5 business days after processing, always depending on demand
Cost of the procedure
Payments are accepted in national currency, with cash or by electronic payment (debit).
- If it is a common application for the first time: $3207 + the certification of Judicial Background $107
- If it is an urgent request for the first time: $6413 + the urgent Judicial Record certification $855
- If it is a common application for common renewal: $2138 + the Judicial Record certification $107
- If it is an urgent request for renewal: $4276 + the urgent Judicial Record certification $855.
Simultaneously when making the request for a Passport hearing, the request for the Certification of Judicial Records will be being made, this is issued by the National Directorate of the Scientific Police, it is carried out at the National Directorate of Civil Identification, who is in charge of send it to whoever is responsible.
It is important to keep in mind that operating costs will be added to the cost of the procedure, according to the payment method used.

The schedule for attending hearings, common or urgent, is as follows:
- From Monday to Friday, from 08:00 to 16:00.
For urgent requests the quotas are limited, their allocation depends on the demand.
Inside:
In Departmental Offices of Civil Identification (except Colón, Geant, Las Piedras and Pando).
During the hours of attention to the public and issuance of hearings:
- Winter: Monday to Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Summer: Monday to Friday 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Validity
The Uruguayan passport is valid for ten (10) years.
It is important to be aware that the passport not withdrawn by the applicant within 60 days of its issuance will be eliminated or destroyed, without prior communication to the applicant.
